AMC's Bruening Is Playing A Bully!

ALL MY CHILDREN alum Justin Bruening (Jamie) takes a walk on the dark side this Saturday night in the Lifetime Original Movie Blue-Eyed Butcher, based on the true story about Susan Wright who was sentenced to 20 years in prison after stabbing her abusive husband nearly 200 times. "It happened in Texas [in 2003], and the movie is based off of that whole gruesome incident," Bruening offers. "It's a real-life little soap opera going on!"

In the film, Bruening plays Jeff, the murdered husband. The Wrights seem to have a fairytale life, but six years into their marriage, it all crumbles when Jeff is found dead and buried in their backyard. While the police accuse Susan of pre-meditated murder -- luring him into their bedroom, tying him up and repeatedly stabbing him before haphazardly cleaning up the crime scene -- Mrs. Wright maintains that she was a battered and abused wife who was acting out of self-preservation for herself and her children. Sara Paxton plays Susan, and HOUSE star Lisa Edelstein portrays the prosecutor who argues that the defendant is not a victim of domestic violence, but actually a cunning sociopath who has used her good looks to try to get away with anything in life... including murder!

As Susan's trial unfolds, the events that took place between the formerly happily married couple are flashed back on. "I usually play the nice guy, but lately I've been playing darker characters," Bruening acknowledges of the surprising casting. "I think it's fun in this business to stretch myself."

This movie certainly gave him the opportunity to do just that! "I read the script and saw that there were few things I had to do where I was like ooooh this is so awkward, especially since Sara is so sweet and nice," he confides. "I have to choke her, beat her, kick her... People aren't gonna like me much."

Blue-Eyed Butcher will make its world premiere on Saturday, March 3, at 8 p.m. on Lifetime.

Wagner Joins New DANCING Cast!

As Soaps In Depth hinted on Friday, now that his stint on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL has wrapped up, Jack Wagner (Nick; ex-Frisco, GENERAL HOSPITAL) will have plenty of time to practice the two-step for the new season of DANCING WITH THE STARS! This morning, ABC announced that Wagner will be one of the 12 celebrities headed to the dance floor for the 14th season of the competition. The other stars include singers Gavin DeGraw, Katherine Jenkins and Gladys Knight, former NFL star Donald Driver, Disney Channel actor Roshon Fegan, Telemundo star William Levy, LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE star Melissa Gilbert, FAMILY MATTERS' Jaleel White, tennis champ Martina Navratilova, EXTRA hostess Maria Menounos and THE VIEW hostess Sherri Shepherd.

"The timing was impeccable," Wagner told Soaps In Depth at a press conference this morning just after the announcement was made. "Just right when B&B and I parted ways...this happened a week later. This show has been on the plate, but I couldn't do it. The schedule worked out perfectly."

The new cast will take the stage for the first time during the two-hour season premiere on Monday, March 19.

Will A Daytimer Be On The Next DANCING Roster?

In just a few days -- Tuesday, February 28, to be exact! -- ABC will announce the cast for the 14th season of DANCING WITH THE STARS. While various reality television fan sites have been speculating about the celebrities rumored to be hoofing it this spring, none have made mention of any daytime-connected stars who may be strapping on tap shoes for the upcoming installment. Soaps In Depth is hearing whispers from our DANCING connections that a face familiar to GENERAL HOSPITAL viewers may very well be vying for that mirrorball trophy!

So who among the current GH cast do we think would make a great DANCING competitor? Naturally, Maurice Benard (Sonny) and his dimpled smile jumps to mind, as does GH veteran Anthony Geary (Luke). (How many Luke and Laura fans would tune in to see that?!?) Bruce Weitz (Anthony) had a prolific film and television career prior to joining the soap, making him a more mainstream choice, and Jason Thompson (Patrick) recently branched out to another ABC show with his guest appearance on CASTLE next Monday, so maybe DANCING is next on his To-Do list! Both Laura Wright (Carly) and Kristen Alderson (Starr) have revealed their desire to dance, so perhaps one of them will be getting their wish? There's also the physically-fit Steve Burton (Jason) and Scott Reeves (Steve), who is also a musician.

Upon further investigation, another DANCING source indicates to In Depth that the contender is actually a star associated with GH -- and not a member of the current cast. While Jonathan Jackson (ex-Lucky) would be a great celebrity to appear on the show, his ABC pilot, NASHVILLE, will be filming during the time that the new season kicks off in March. Similarly, John Stamos (ex-Blackie) has a huge mainstream following, but he's also currently tied to an upcoming pilot. Emma Samms (Holly) and her DYNASTY/THE COLBYS fan base would make her a popular choice, and lots of viewers would tune in to see singer Rick Springfield (Noah) do the tango. Since he is returning to GH this spring, ABC would be gaining a great cross-promotion opportunity by casting Springfield. There's also Springfield's '80's soap star/singer rival Jack Wagner (Frisco) to bear in mind. While its rumored that Wagner may be next on GH's returning list, the end of his run on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL has opened up a block of time in his schedule. Plus, B&B tapes on the same lot as DANCING, so he knows his way to the studio! The soon-to-depart Nathan Parsons (Ethan) is a trained dancer, and even performs with his dance troupe, BoomKat Dance Theatre, so he definitely has the skills to Cha-Cha across the floor and impress judge Bruno Tonioli. Our final guess is Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo (Brenda), who has the beauty and grace to tackle the two-step, and the former LAS VEGAS and BEVERLY HILLS, 90210 star comes complete with a primetime pedigree behind her.

Who do you think will be on the new season of DANCING WITH THE STARS? Let us know below! ABC will announce the new cast during GOOD MORNING AMERICA on Tuesday morning.

Interview: Take A Deep Breath With Gatschet!

It's hard to imagine that not everyone has the ability to gasp after those particularly juicy soap opera cliffhangers, but with lung cancer now killing more people than any other cancer in the world, it's true. But ALL MY CHILDREN's Stephanie Gatschet (Madison; ex-Tammy, GUIDING LIGHT) hopes she can change that. Following the success of the Free To Breathe yogathon she organized last year, which supported the National Lung Cancer Partnership, she's up for the challenge again! And like last year, she's got plenty of support from her former AMC co-stars, including Jill Larson (Opal), who's part of the planning committee for the 2012 yogathon. "She lost a friend to lung cancer, so she wanted to help out," says Gatschet, who began her own support of the cause after her mother was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2006. "The kids of AMC started a team -- Danielle Parker (Emma) and Tate Berney (AJ) -- which was so sweet. And I got a voicemail yesterday from Melissa Claire Egan (Annie; Chelsea, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS), who wanted to know how she could get involved and help, so I asked if she would lead a team of soap actors. That means, if as many people as last year can make it again this year, we should have a nice showing of soap actors!"

And hopefully that means there will be a nice showing of support from fans, as well, since Gatschet is passionate about fundraising for the cause as well as teaching people that lung cancer is not just a smoker's disease. "You don't really think of it as being a disease that young people get, but they do," the actress explains. "I met a girl in her late 20s who has lung cancer, and it took a long time for the doctors to even consider she had it, thinking instead that she had pneumonia or an upper respiratory infection. Likewise, my mom works with a girl who is a Division One college athlete, who's young and perfectly fit, who you would never in a million years suspect has lung cancer, but she does. So all of this work has totally changed my perception of who lung cancer affects. You usually think of it as being [something that affects] old people or smokers only, but that's just not the case."

To donate to the National Lung Cancer Partnership or to join Gatschet's yogathon -- which takes place on Sunday, March 25 at the Women's Club of Hollywood in Los Angeles -- visit And don't forget that this year's event is family-friendly! "We're having kid yoga, too, with special instructors," Gatschet is proud to share. "So you can bring the whole family!"

Enation Visits The East Coast!

Do you miss seeing Jonathan Jackson on the screen as GENERAL HOSPITAL's Lucky? If you live on the East Coast -- or in Nashville -- then you may be able to get your fix! The fan favorite and his band, Enation, will be playing three acoustic concerts in the New York area later this month, then hit up Nashville for a show!

"We are really excited to come out to the New York area, and then Nashville," says Jackson. "These are going to be really intimate, special shows. We're going to do a meet & greet and it's going to be a unique setting, to get to meet people and hopefully play some wonderful music that they enjoy. And just spend some time hanging out. It's gonna be a lot of fun. We'll have a concert, a Q&A, and meet & greet time."

Questions about Jackson possibly returning to GH have been circling around the Web -- will he address the rumors during the Q&A portions of the shows? "People are welcome to ask me whatever they'd like. What those answers will be, you'll have to be there to find out!" he teases. "I'm looking forward to connecting again with so many amazing fans."

UPDATED: ATI Drops Out Of Emmy Telecast!

Associated Television International (ATI), the production company which has put on the Daytime Emmy Awards broadcast since 2009, will not be helming the show this year. In a statement released on Twitter, president Jim Romanovich announced that the company has opted to step away from producing daytime's biggest night.

"Regretfully, we have today officially passed on doing The Daytime Emmys for television this year. As fans of the soaps in particular, as well as being daytime producers ourselves, we have immensely enjoyed being a part of your celebration these past three years. In 2009, there was not going to be a Daytime Emmys for television, as you know. It was over. we felt it was important for it to continue on television for as long as possible to give actors, producers, writers and so forth the night of recognition they so deserve. It wasn't always easy. In fact, it was quite challenging on many levels. Although it was never a money making project for us, it was prestigious, first and foremost, plus we wanted to do something important for the daytime community. I would like to think in some small way we have contributed in the interest of the daytime soap formula being created beyond television as we're now seeing through various online ventures, such as what Prospect Park had tried to do, and series currently thriving on the web."

For the full statement, including what the production company had planned to do with this year's ceremony, click here. Keep checking back as this story develops.

UPDATE: Bruce Rosenblum, Chairman of The National Academy Of Television Arts And Sciences posted a statement responding to the current situation on the Academy's Web site that should give fans some hope. "The Daytime Emmy Awards is a powerful brand," he writes. "We at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences are continuing to explore all broadcast possibilities including network, cable and digital media in order to produce a prestigious show that will satisfy the daytime community, fans and the worldwide viewing audiences."

On this week's episode of THE SECRET CIRCLE, Joe Lando (Jake, ONE LIFE TO LIVE) brings Cassie's mysterious father, John Blackwell, to life. Speaking to Soaps in Depth from the set in Vancouver, Lando was excited to dish about his new role with his fans. "The show is based on a series of novels [by L.J. Smith], and in the books, I guess I'm kind of like the Antichrist. I'm the father of all the children in the circle, [and] there are all kinds of connections with the Blackwell character that I had no idea about!" Lando laughs.

While so far, the actor knows he'll be Cassie's witchy dad on the TV series, he remains in the dark about the rest... including how long he'll be around. "My voice appeared in one episode, I'm working on another now, and I'm in the next one, so that's three so far," he reveals. "I thought I was just guest starring, and now I don't know when I'm going home. They told me they're holding me captive!"

THE SECRET CIRCLE airs Thursday nights at 9 p.m. ET on The CW. Want to see a teaser clip of Lando's Blackwell? Click here. For more about Lando's wicked role, check out his Keeping Track feature in an the new ABC issue of Soaps In Depth, on sale later this week!

Lilley Speaks Out

In the six months since Jen Lilley has temporarily taken over the role of GENERAL HOSPITAL's Maxie, the actress has faced harsh criticism from fans of the character's most recent portrayer, Kirsten Storms. Storms herself was a recast, taking over the role from Robyn Richards when GH decided to age Felicia and Frisco's eldest daughter. Lilley recently found herself on the receiving end of a backlash when GH announced that Storms would not be returning to the show as soon as expected. Now, Lilley has taken to Twitter to make a statement and defend the difficult position in which she's been placed.

"I had to get twitlonger to answer properly," she writes. "First, I, Jen Lilley, LOVE Kirsten Storms. I think she's talented, funny, beautiful, and kind. While I have loved my time on GH, I think it's under the saddest of conditions that I'm there.

"Because of unforeseen circumstances, I am staying as Maxie," she continues. "Please know that as a KS fan, I am really sorry. Kirsten is irreplaceable. To keep GH alive, someone had to step into the role. I cannot change what's happened. Yes, I love being on the show, but if KS could have stayed all along, I would have wished a thousand wishes that I could have come on as a different character, for her sake and your sake as a GH fan. Change is never easy.

"I hope you will find it in your hearts to stop being so hateful toward me personally, because honestly, after 6 months of it, I feel broken, and it's not helping the show. We have to stand united for the sake of General Hospital's livelihood and for soap fans everywhere. I think all of Kirsten's wonderful fans know that she'd want her fans to support GH and fight like hell for it's renewal. With utmost sincerity: Jen Lilley."

Could Soaps Hit Hollywood?

There has been a lot of buzz about the demise of soap operas, but a new documentary just might bring the sad reality into the same world as Brad Pitt, Steven Spielberg and other big time Hollywood names! Called Soap Life, the docu-film is about the changes taking place in the world of daytime television, and with over 70 interviews featuring fans, stars, producers, directors, writers, bloggers and fan club leaders, it could show the world what's really happening in daytime.

"The wife of our executive producer, John Grossman, who owns the production company NYPS, is a big fan of GENERAL HOSPITAL, and her whole thing was, 'You have the ability, so let's do something to save the soaps,'" explains producer Matthew D'Amato of how it all began. "We started doing research, and we sat down with a few actors, producers and directors, and said, 'Is this is a good idea? Could this work? Should we pursue it?' And we looked it up online and didn't see anything like this, so we thought it would be important to get started."

And the main goal of the film, D'Amato explains, is to generate enough buzz about the possible end of soaps to possibly prevent it from happening. "Hopefully this will get enough attention to help the genre, because we don't want to see it fade away," he says, adding that it's tentatively scheduled for a June 2012 release date at film festivals and possibly on networks such as Showtime. "We do want to see it at festivals, and we do want to see it on networks [so] people who aren't soap fans can watch the film and kind of relate to it, hear the stories and maybe want to pick them up or maybe do something about the genre. We have contacts we can send it to in order to get it out there, so hopefully it will get bigger and bigger!"

GH Fans, Join Our B.A.N.D. -- Bring A Newbie Day!

After the success of last week's Bring A Newbie Day -- a new program that we're starting here at Soaps In Depth to encourage GENERAL HOSPITAL fans to introduce non-GH fans to the fun and excitement of life in Port Charles -- we're going to do it again tomorrow!

On Friday at 3 p.m. ET, our executive editor, Richard M. Simms, will be live-tweeting the show -- hopefully, along with you GH fans -- at @soapsindepthabc. The goal is for each of us -- you included -- to entice a non-GH viewer to tune in with us. When they have questions -- "Isn't that Cassie from GUIDING LIGHT?" "Wait, the mobster's son is a policeman?" "Has that cute blonde girl always liked wine so very much?" -- you and Richard will be right there on twitter to answer them.

This way, we can not only share the experience of watching our favorite show, but we can encourage more folks to do so as well (thus bringing up the ratings and, knock wood, insuring that ABC's last soap will go on and on and on).

So what do you say? Who's in?

If this continues to be the fun that we had with it last week, we'll be doing B.A.N.D. tweets for other shows on other days TBA.

Brown Is In Demand!

While loony Lisa was the last person anyone wanted to see in Port Charles, her talented portrayer, Brianna Brown, is wanted everywhere! Her recurring role last fall as an undercover prostitute for a Saudi prince on the Showtime hit drama HOMELAND has put her on the radar. "I have been working a boatload [since October] -- literally non-stop -- and receiving straight offers," she tells Soaps In Depth.

Last month, she appeared as a love interest for Taye Diggs on PRIVATE PRACTICE. "Then I shot USA's new show COMMON LAW, and CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION, working opposite Ted Danson," she confides of the episode airing Wednesday, February 8, at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. (ALL MY CHILDREN's Jill Larson (Opal) also appears in the episode.)

Look for Brown to appear in an episode of HBO's hit vampire drama TRUE BLOOD when its next season kicks off this summer, as well as NBC's upcoming drama AWAKE. "[It] is produced by Howard Gordon [one of the creators of HOMELAND]... It's a very big guest star, and who knows what will transpire," Brown says with a grin. "I'm having a blast working opposite [series stars] Jason Isaacs and Steve Harris."

Lindstrom Finds Puppy Love!

Having spent the bulk of his career as a soap star, Jon Lindstrom (Kevin/Ryan, GENERAL HOSPITAL and PORT CHARLES) has had his share of smokin' hot female love interests. However, in his new romantic comedy, What Happens Next -- releasing on Netflix and DVD on Tuesday, February 7 -- Lindstrom is getting an adorable leading man! "I'm very, very proud of this movie," he offers of the picture that explores a gay relationship. "I think it's a little comic gem and given the political atmosphere out there, I think it was brave to make it."

In this film festival favorite, Lindstrom plays Paul Grecco, a recently retired, straight billionaire and socialite who finds himself at loose ends until his worried sister (HOT IN CLEVELAND's Wendie Malick) gives him a puppy. "While walking the dog in the park, he meets a young man [Andy, a gay advertising wiz], and they start to develop a friendship," Lindstrom previews. "Paul finds out things about himself that he'd never really considered."

As the new friends explore the distinction between contentment and happiness, they also face complications presented by their ill-informed family members, including Andy's sister, Roz, -- played by ALL MY CHILDREN's Natalia Cigliuti (Anita) -- and their well-meaning advisors. "Megan Hilty (SMASH) has a hilarious scene as Wendie's manicurist," Lindstrom previews.

Want to get a jump-start on the laughs? Visit to view the trailer, or or to purchase the film. For more on Lindstrom's post-soap career, check out his feature interview in an upcoming issue of Soaps In Depth.

More Life For SOAPnet?

It was announced ages ago that SOAPnet would be going off the air sometime in 2012, and a March 23rd start date for ABC's new children's network, Disney Junior, seemed to be the final nail in the sudsy channel's coffin. However, a rep for the network says, "We've always viewed the launch of Disney Junior as a transition, not a flip of a switch, and as such SOAPnet will remain available for an undetermined period of time as additional carriage deals for Disney Junior are finalized with distributors." So while the network's days are numbered, depending on your cable provider, you might just get your daily soap fix for a little while longer.
