Benard Film In The Works!

Thumbnail image for Maurice.jpg

After playing Sonny on GENERAL HOSPITAL for almost 20 years, Maurice Benard is spreading his wings in a new film role that has the Emmy winner very excited! The Ghost And The Whale will be shot this January in Bodega Bay, a small "village" along the northern coast of California. The story is about a man who goes through a spiritual journey after his wife dies mysteriously at sea and he's accused of her murder. Championing this film are the incomparable Gaudioso Twins, maverick directors responsible for Duke and Medium.

"I believe in Maurice Benard and am intrigued by him," says Anthony Gaudioso. "He played a small role in Duke, and my brother James and I both took notice. The Ghost And The Whale has Maurice in the lead role where he will undoubtedly stretch his acting muscles. It will be exciting to see what this fantastic veteran brings to the character."

This particular project means a lot to Benard for many reasons, all of them very personal. First, his wife, Paula Benard, is executive producing along with the Gaudioso Twins. In addition, the thing hitting him the hardest (in a good way!) is the affirmation that others believe in him as an actor. In fact, one of the financial backers (close friends Tori Burns Humphrey, who is part owner of the San Francisco Giants, and her husband, Steve Humphrey) green-lit the film after telling the directors, "It's because we believe in Maurice." Hearing that touched Benard deeply.

"We all know it's tough, especially when you've been on a soap for as long as I have," Benard says. "In terms of trying to break out, nobody really cares about soaps. Within the soap world, it's the greatest job in the world. But for me, it will be tough unless somebody gives me that break. I believe that this film is that break."

In Depth will keep you posted on further developments!

Who Is Duke Lavery?

dool111611_807718.jpg

You ask, we answer! Since yesterday's stunning revelation that Duke Lavery was the man behind Robin's disappearance and kidnapping, fans have been clamoring to know: who's Duke Lavery, and how is he connected to Anna's past (as the doctor in the Swiss mental institution mentioned)?

Longtime viewers of the soap will recall that Duke (a character originated and now once again played by Ian Buchanan) is the Scottish rogue of a husband that Anna thought was dead! She'd met him back in 1986 and believed him to be a nightclub owner. It was later revealed that he was actually a mobster who was involved in a money-laundering scheme with Anna's dirty co-police chief, Burt Ramsey (aka Mr. Big). Despite a series of roadblocks (including Robert's bid to reclaim her heart), the very-much-in-love duo finally did make it down the aisle.

However, after testifying against the mob, Duke faked his death and entered Witness Protection. Shockingly, he later returned with a new face and a new name (the role was assumed by Greg Beecroft). Anna found out the truth from dying mob princess Olivia Jerome (who wanted Duke for herself); however, before Anna could be reunited with her husband, Olivia's mobster brother, Julian, shot Duke! Anna was devastated when her great love died in her arms in 1990. So it was a stunner this week to find out that the man behind Robin's ordeal (whom she knew as her stepfather) is not only alive, but has his original face back!

Of note, Buchanan had been airing as villain Ian McAllister on DAYS OF OUR LIVES until just last week, when his character was arrested for the kidnapping of Stefano. How might the return of Duke to the canvas affect Anna's budding romance with Robert's best friend, Luke? And why did he abduct Robin? Keep watching to find out!

GH's Emma Hits Primetime!

Brooklyn_Rae_Silzer_Jas.jpg

Daytime soap operas aren't the only ones who SORAS their little kids. This fall, CSI: NY's Lucy Messer, the daughter of Carmine Giovinazzo's Danny and Anna Belknap's Lindsay, will now be played by GENERAL HOSPITAL's Brooklyn Silzer (Emma)!

The season premiere of CSI: NY is Friday, September 28 at 8pm EST on CBS, with Silzer's episode currently scheduled to air sometime in late October. However, GH fans shouldn't worry that this new gig means that Patrick and Robin's little girl will need to be recast and possibly SORASed herself. A rep for the soap confirms that Silzer will continue playing Emma while moonlighting in primetime!

Steve Burton Leaving GH!

Burtoncrop.jpg

GENERAL HOSPITAL may be able to survive Jerry Jacks, but can it survive the loss of Stone Cold himself, Jason Morgan? According to an interview with Steve Burton in TV Guide, that's exactly what the soap is going to have to do!

Burton has long wanted to move to the country with his family to a house that he bought in Tennessee, and it seems that the fan-favorite actor has decided that now is finally time to say farewell to GH.

"I've had a great run on the show," Burton told Soaps In Depth recently. "I love the show. It's been my home for 20 years plus. I love the people there. But I'm also ready for other stuff."

Although his last scheduled day on the set is scheduled for September 25, that could change slightly depending on storyline. But look for Jason to air through October, possibly into November.

With Jason being such a crucial part of Port Charles, his exit would leave Sam, Liz, Sonny and Carly with a big hole in their lives. There's no word yet as to whether or not GH is even considering recasting the role, but we will continue to pursue this breaking story and bring you updates on final airdates and any other news as it happens!

GH's Trey Needs Your Help!

IMG_7308.jpg

Soap stars are always lending their time and celebrity to help worthy causes, and GENERAL HOSPITAL newbie Erik Valdez (Trey) isn't wasting any time enlisting fan support for his favorite charity!

"Since joining the cast of GH, a world of opportunities has opened up," he says, "the ability to work with charities is one of them. I'll be riding in a charity bike ride next month and am raising money for the Best Buddies organization."

Best Buddies International is an organization dedicated to creating opportunities for friendship, employment and leadership training for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Valdez's bike ride, a 100-mile ride down the Pacific Coast Highway (with alternative 62, 30 and 15-mile routes!), will be held on Saturday, September 9.

Port Charles Devastation?

ghEpisode12630_949872.jpg Jerry wages a war against Port Charles!

Tracy Quartermaine had a one night stand, Anna Devane was happy to be in a straightjacket, and Carly was caught watching a cooking show. Oh, what has the world come to?! These days, everything on GENERAL HOSPITAL is upside down and backwards. Not that that is a bad thing because it isn't. In fact, it hasn't been this exciting in years, and the party is just getting started!

Everybody sing! Ready? "It's raining men! Hallelujah! It's raining men!" Sorry, it's just that whenever Carly pops on the screen, there's an uncontrollable urge to start singing that little ditty. She's got the guys lining up and taking numbers like she was the daily special at Abe's Deli! While she was getting a sneaky peek at Todd's tummy, Johnny was getting a peek at Jax's. Her current squeeze got mighty miffed when her "technically not ex ex-husband" answered her hotel room door with nothing on but the radio and a towel. So many men, so little time.

While Anna and Luke searched a Swiss mental institution for Robin, Olivia had another freaky yet prophetic hallucination and Tracy played footsies with Joe Jr., Jerry took to the airwaves, prepared to tell everyone in listening distances that they were about to die! Talk about reality TV! This week, Port Charles wakes up and the town patrons start dropping like flies! Will Jerry's demands be met before people ended up dead? Don't count on it!

Murder En Masse On GH?

Will Jerry succeed in killing an entire town?

JerryJax.jpg GENERAL HOSPITAL has officially become "must see TV"! If you haven't watched the Friday, August 17 episode, stop what you're doing, let your fingers do the walking across your keyboard and rush to ABC.com to see it. That's an order!

Like a 1970's disaster film where the teenagers are in one corner of town looking all googly-eyed because they are SO in love (uh huh), while an evil genius sips on spirits in a spooky mansion, plotting what amounts to mass murder, it was edge-of-your-seat suspense. Alexis and Josslyn were ringing the bell while stepping on death's doorstep, as Jerry's voice-over narrated his scheme to poison Port Charles! For the second time in a month or so, believers gathered hands and prayed for the ill and, voila! Fevers broke, everybody hugged and happiness prevailed... for the time being.

Smiles and relief will be fleeting, no doubt. Just wait until the week of August 20, because it'll be a doozy!

Jason's suspicion of Ewen prompts him to unleash Spinelli on an all-out hunt for secrets the jumpy doc may be keeping... and he comes up with a whopper! Jax returns to PC to check on his ailing daughter and, while he's around, has a question or two for Carly that could possibly open a whole other can of worms! There's also Kate's memory flash of Connie, Joe's surprising encounter with Tracy, and Anna's search for Robin... that is, unless everyone ends up dead, courtesy of Mr. Jerry Jacks!

Robuck tells Soaps In Depth exclusively.

Gaskill Goes Dark!

BrianGaskill-192.jpg

When Emmy nominated Web drama, THE BAY, kicks off its summer special, DARKSIDE OF THE BAY, viewers will learn that there's a whole lot more to Bay City than just rich folks and white sand beaches. Helping to tell the edgy tale will be soap opera veteran, Brian Gaskill (Rafe, PORT CHARLES; Bobby, ALL MY CHILDREN). "The [story] is about the show's younger characters getting wrapped up in this dark world on the other side of the tracks," previews Gaskill. "Lianna (played by Jade Harlow; Jessica, PASSSIONS) gets kind of [involved] in the prostitution ring that my character, Chase, works in as a pimp. I'm not the head honcho, but I work for [him]."

Gaskill has explored his own dark side before while playing AS THE WORLD TURNS' obsessive, BJ Greene, but the actor says that he approached this new character from another direction. "He's very different... laid back and soft spoken," Gaskill suggests. "Somebody who saw the dailies said that it reminded him of Mickey Rourke." The good news is that Gaskill's time in Bay City won't be wrapping up with the dog days of summer.

"Of all the magnificent roles we've seen Gaskill play, this is by far the creepiest," offers series creator Gregori J. Martin. "He was so captivating as Chase that I just had to bring him back for Season 3 of THE BAY [coming this October]." Also debuting in the special will be fellow soap alumni Rib Hillis (Jake, PC), Terri Ivens (Simone, AMC), and Massi Furlan (ex-Giovanni, GENERAL HOSPITAL). DARKSIDE OF THE BAY kicks off on Thursday, August 9, at 12 p.m. EST.

Maurice Has A Date With The East!

We know that GENERAL HOSPITAL's Maurice Benard (Sonny) love his fans. But did you know that, for the second summer in a row, the actor has loaded up his family into an RV and is driving from their California home, across the country, to the East Coast just so the Emmy winner can meet and greet his fans in the Tri-State area? Yep, the actor has a handful of public appearances scheduled for next weekend in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, and he can't wait to see you there!

"I have the greatest time at these events," the actor told Soaps In Depth when we caught up with him in the midst of his road trip. "I'm more relaxed now than when I was younger, and I love the connection that I get with the people at these appearances. The fans open up, and so do I. I'm pretty honest at these things. I laugh, I cry sometimes... because you get into it. The fans are great."

Not only does Benard promise his fans a great time at the shows, but some lucky folks may even find themselves in a future issue of In Depth standing next to the dimpled star! "We're going to have one person from each show get their picture taken to be in the magazine," he explains. "Soaps In Depth is like family! I've never done that. I think it's going to be fun, something different."

"It was really fun," Anderson says of the role. "I get to play a fiery zealot who thinks just about everyone should burn if they don't think like he does. That might not sound 'fun,' but for me it was nice to do something other than my usual wide-eyed innocent."

The actor also learned that there was a surprising connection between his daytime home and PERCEPTION star Eric McCormack. "It was a great cast and crew," Anderson reports. "And I also learned that GH is frequently viewed in the McCormack household!"
