GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Richard Burgi Doesn’t Think He’s Playing a Villain

Richard Burgi won’t use the B-word when discussing his dubious GENERAL HOSPITAL character, Paul.

“Everybody thought he was a bad guy and some still do,” the actor tells Soaps In Depth. “But I always try to find the humanity in characters. Everybody’s got various shades and coloration to their being.”

In fact, Burgi sees that same shading in “villain” Ava and “heroine” Anna, and applauds their respective portrayers, Maura West and Finola Hughes, for being able to play the good, the bad, and the conflict.

“I absolutely adore working with both of them,” he raves. “GH is allowing Maura’s darker shades to be exposed, which I find extremely compelling, and the same with Finola. Anna is essentially a very light person, but when you scratch the surface, you see the same sort of textures and subtleties in tone revealed. They both have a lot of range. They’re wonderful actresses and a lot of fun to work with.”

In the new ABC issue of Soaps In Depth, on stands now, Burgi opens up about playing shifty Paul and reveals which of his character’s soured relationships he’d like to see revisited!
