Will Benard Make It To The Emmys?

Have no fear soap fans, GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Maurice Benard (Sonny) will be there, but he’ll be late. Though he’s nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Lead Actor category, Benard won’t even be thinking of another possible win tomorrow (he previously brought home the statue in 2003), since he’ll be celebrating his daughter Cailey’s graduation!

“It will be a great day,” Benard tells Soaps In Depth. Of course, since the family affair will be a late afternoon event, Benard and his wife, Paula, will be cutting it close to make it to the Emmys before the doors of the Beverly Hills Hilton slam shut! (The ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. PST.) “I hope they still let me in,” smiles the actor. (Something tells us they’ll let the nominee in as easily as they would open the doors for Sonny… without him having to make an offer they can’t refuse.)

“I’m sure it is going to be a fun night,” Benard adds. And while he’s well aware that Anthony Geary (Luke), one of his favorite co-stars and a six-time Emmy winner, is favored to take home the prize, he’s okay with that! “I am always quite happy for him,” Benard offers. The actor is also very fond of his former ALL MY CHILDREN co-star,** Darnell Williams** (he played Jesse to Benard’s Nico, and now portrays THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS’ Sarge), his ONE LIFE TO LIVE pal** Robert S. Woods** (Bo), and THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL’s John McCook (Eric), who are also up for the award. “It’s a great category and I will be happy no matter who goes up on that stage!”
