A downtrodden Alan begged Phillip to let him do something courageous for once in his life by allowing him to donate bone marrow for the potentially life-saving surgery. Phillip relented, and Alan assured his son that he loved him as they were being wheeled into the operating room. The surgery was a success, but Ed warned that complications could arise. Meanwhile, James fretted to Daisy that he should have been the donor because he didn’t think his grandfather’s body could handle the surgery. The Spaulding family patriarch later announced that the successful operation would serve as a new beginning for all of them. All of Springfield, including Alan’s foe, Buzz, applauded Phillip’s dad for his selfless act. Phillip told Beth that he always had and always would love her. He then proposed, with her happily accepting. He rushed off to share the news with his father, but Alan didn’t respond. Touching his lifeless body, Phillip realized his father was dead! Phillip immediately called Rick, who arrived and confirmed the worst. Phillip told his family of the tragedy, and news slowly spread throughout Springfield that the man everyone had loved to hate had passed away. The town gathered at the lake to spread Alan’s ashes and say a final farewell.
Double Matrimony!
Prior to the sad news, the town gathered for a much happier occasion: Billy and Vanessa’s wedding. Bridget, Nola and Dylan came back for the occasion. Just as the festivities were about to begin, Buzz kissed Lillian passionately and asked her to become his bride. When she accepted, Billy and Vanessa insisted that the newly-engaged pair join them for a double wedding. Both couples tied the knot as their friends and family looked on. Love was in the air as Mel and Cyrus shared their first passionate encounter while elsewhere, Frank and Blake realized that they had been cyberchatting via the on-line dating site. Michelle, Danny and Mindy all announced plans to come home permanently. Realizing that their latest marriage was not valid, Remy and Christina rectified the situation before announcing that they were expecting a baby.
Springfield Happenings
The Cooper and Lewis clans gathered to celebrate Henry’s first birthday. Still adjusting to his new role as a father, Shayne told Josh that he finally felt whole. Reva confessed to Jonathan that she was trying to get her life back on track, not realizing that her son was in constant communication with her supposedly-deceased husband. Jeffrey warned his stepson that Edmund was keeping a close eye on everyone in town. Meanwhile, on the outskirts of Austria, Mallet called to wish Henry a happy birthday and apologized for not being there. In Springfield, on the other side of town, Natalia told Blake and Frank that Olivia and Emma were moving back to the farmhouse. Rafe helped his mom and her girlfriend settle in before leaving for his stint in the Army. Josh told Reva of his plan to head back to Oklahoma and reclaim his life. He then suggested that if she wanted to reunite, they should meet at the lighthouse in one year. Daisy and Ashlee packed their bags for California to attend college. Still grieving for Alan, Alexandra left the country with Fletcher, while Ed and Holly set out on their own overseas adventure.
One Year Later…
The residents of Springfield gathered at a baseball field to cheer on Shayne’s team. A pregnant Lizzie arrived just as Christina showed up with her new son, Clayton. The group gave their best wishes to Rick and Mindy, who were set to marry the next day. James paid a visit to Ashlee and Daisy in California. Rafe returned to town and met his baby sister, Francesca. Dinah and Mallet reunited in Europe. Reva met Josh at the lighthouse and revealed that she did in fact want to be with him. Delighted, he, Reva and Colin made plans to go on a new adventure. When he asked his longtime beloved if she was ready for what lay ahead, she replied, “Always.”
